I’ve updated my Whois record, but a Google search still shows my old information. Why?

There are two common scenarios here:
(1) If you have recently updated your Whois record with your Registrar, but the Whois record shown on our site does not reflect that update, it is most likely that the Registrar has not propagated the update to the public domain yet. It can take up to 48 hours between you updating your information with your Registrar and the Registrar making that publicly available.
(2) If you have already updated your Whois record with your Registrar and we now show that same information on our Whois page, but a Google search still shows the old information, then what you are seeing is an indexing issue with Google. We have no control over Google search results.
Google indexes and updates their results based on their own algorithms. They do state that eventually all updated web pages will be re-indexed. However, you can read more, and follow these steps, for requesting a re-index: https://support.google.com/websearch/troubleshooter/3111061
(Use the path “Remove information already showing” “Only in Google’s search results”)

How do I change my DNS server setting, mail server or renew my domain registration?

You may have come across a domain ownership record on our site. We provide a research service for publicly available Whois and domain records, much like a library. But we do not manage or control the ownerships records, nor can we change them.
We have no ability to change nameservers, obtain a domain transfer code (EPP), renew domain name registrations, nor assist with email issues. For help with any of these issues or your domain, you need to contact your webmaster, hosting company or Registrar for support.

How do I fix Google linkback penalties?

Question: “Google (Penguin) has informed me of a possible penalty due to linkbacks.”
We can appreciate your concern that Google has raised with unnatural links and are ourselves concerned that we do not do anything that would penalize SEO for your site.
Google states that you do not get penalized for “nofollow” links. All links from DomainTools to your website are “nofollow”. This means search bots do not follow the links and therefore would not damage or impact your site in any way. We cannot remove these links because it is important that our users be able to navigate to your site.
For further help with unnatural links, we suggest posting at the Google Webmaster Help Forum:

How do I change the information on my domain’s Whois record?

If you want to change contact information in your Whois record you need to contact your Registrar. The Registrar should be able to assist you in changing contact information. Once you have updated the information with your Registrar, the publicly available Whois record will be updated by the Registrar, and the Whois record we show will also update accordingly. In most cases it takes 24-48 hours for information on Whois services to reflect updates.
Our Whois service provides access to the public information service for currently registered domain names. The Whois record is a publicly available record provided by your Registrar based on the information you provided at the time the domain was registered.
ICANN policy requires Registrars to maintain the accuracy of the domain name owners’ contact details in the Whois database:
http://www.icann.org/en/resources/registrars/registrant-rights-responsibilities (see ‘Whois Info’ section)
Because this is a live public record, all of the information we display comes from the source Registrar, and we have no ability to alter or change it.

What is an MX (Mail Exchanger) Record? https://www.domaintools.com/support/what-is-an-mx-mail-exchanger-record/ Wed, 11 Feb 2015 00:00:00 +0000 https://domaintools.wpengine.com/support/what-is-an-mx-mail-exchanger-record/ The post What is an MX (Mail Exchanger) Record? appeared first on DomainTools | Start Here. What is an MX (Mail Exchanger) Record?

The Internet depends on a system of servers that convert human-friendly names like “DomainTools.com” into an Internet address (known as an “IP address“). When someone types a website address (called a “URL“) into their browser, their computer must first retrieve a domain name record so it knows which IP address to send the request to.
A similar process happens when you send an email, except that email servers ask for a special kind of record called an “MX Record” (“MX” stands for “Mail eXchanger”). That record provides the IP address (or addresses) of a server that can receive messages for a certain domain name.

What is an SPF (Sender Policy Framework) Record? https://www.domaintools.com/support/what-is-an-spf-sender-policy-framework-record/ Wed, 11 Feb 2015 00:00:00 +0000 https://domaintools.wpengine.com/support/what-is-an-spf-sender-policy-framework-record/ The post What is an SPF (Sender Policy Framework) Record? appeared first on DomainTools | Start Here. ]]>
What is an SPF (Sender Policy Framework) Record?

SPF stands for “Sender Policy Framework” which describes an optional mechanism mail servers can use to verify whether to trust the source of an email message. Participating mail servers for a given domain name publish a special type of domain name record that lists which servers are authorized to send mail for a domain name.
For example, your email server receives a message that claims to be from PayPal.com about your account. Your email server first checks the source Internet address (or IP address) the mail is coming from, and then retrieves the SPF records for PayPal.com. If the IP address is not listed in the SPF records for PayPal.com (or in one of the domains those records refer to), your email server may delete the message or mark it as spam to warn you about the mis-match.
Unlike MX records, SPF records are not required to make email work properly, and not all domain names publish them. Most mail servers will still accept email for domains that do not publish SPF records, but some more zealous servers will not. The best practice is to always publish accurate SPF records for your domain names to ensure the best likelihood of delivery.
