Does the Domain Search API have the same capabilities as it does on the DomainTools site?

Yes. The Domain Search API offers the same efficient technology one would find on DomainTools.com directly though XML or JSON. Search is constantly updated and is sure to provide your customers with the same experience they’d find if using Domain Search on the DomainTools website.

How do I use Domain Search?

An input box allows you to enter a domain name (with or without the extension). Domain Search returns a tabular view where each row is a domain name that contains the name you searched on, with registration status across TLDs:
– gTLDs (generic TLDs of com, org, net, biz, info, and us) are shown by default
– ccTLDs (country code TLDs) and new gTLDs are shown when you expand the row by clicking anywhere on the row
The boxes representing the TLD variants of the domain name are color-coded to indicate the status of the domain name for that TLD:
– Gray = domain is taken
– Green = domain is available
– Orange = deleted domain that was previously registered
Within the Domain Search results, clicking a TLD box opens a new tab showing you either the Whois page (for taken domains) or the purchase/availability check page (for available or deleted domains).
Advanced search options allow you to customize your search in several ways:
– Filter the results by status (available, taken, deleted/previously registered)
– Filter the results by excluding a word or string
– Specify minimum or maximum character counts
– Filter based on whether the domain begins or ends with the original search string
– Show or hide domains that contain numbers or hyphens
For more information, see the Domain Search User Guide.

If a domain found in Domain Search is available for purchase, you can purchase that domain by visiting an ICANN registrar. DomainTools simplifies this process for you – simply click on the preferred dot extension button of the domain name in the Domain Search results (when scrolled over it reads: “Buy This!”) and you will be directed to our preferred ICANN registrar’s website. You can also purchase any available name from an established registrar account that you already have.

What is the difference between Domain Search and the Domain Suggestions tool?

The Domain Search tool is used to search our database of already registered domains. With Domain Search, users may search for registered and previously registered domains using specific keyword or brand search terms and other advanced options including term exclusion. Domain Search results in a list of domains and their registration status at major TLD’s. This tool is used for information purposes and not necessarily to find domains available for purchase. Domain Search allows you to use wild card search of all current, deleted, and expired domain names for over 11 years worth of history.
The Domain Suggestions tool creates unique domain names based on keywords input by the user. This tool searches registered and available domain names using specific and related search terms. This tool is useful for suggesting to users similar domains, that are available for purchase, when the originally searched domain is not available.
